Let's spill the tea on matcha.
-
Our matcha comes exclusively from tea gardens along the Sonogi ridge in Japan. Unlike matcha made by combining leaves from different growing regions, ours is sourced from one distinct place, preserving the character and flavour shaped by its unique growing conditions.
-
First harvest, or ichibancha, refers to the first new tea leaves picked in spring after the slower winter growing period. These young, tender leaves are prized for their natural sweetness and amino acids, which contribute to a smoother, more umami-rich flavour.
-
In the weeks before harvest, tea plants are shaded from direct sunlight. This encourages the development of chlorophyll and helps retain amino acids, including L-theanine, giving matcha its distinctive green colour, natural sweetness and rich umami flavour.
-
Not all matcha tastes the same. The growing conditions, harvest timing, leaf quality and processing methods all influence its flavour. We use first-harvest, shade-grown tencha, carefully blended for gentle sweetness, soft umami and low bitterness.
-
Both! Our pure matcha is grown and produced in Japan, while our ready-to-drink matcha oat lattes are made in Australia using 97% Australian ingredients. We're proudly Australian-founded, with our roots in Byron Bay.
-
Absolutely. Our ready-to-drink matcha oat lattes are made with oat milk and are completely plant-based, dairy-free and seed oil-free. Our pure matcha powder contains just one ingredient: 100% single origin Japanese matcha. Nothing added.
-
At House of Matcha, we're all about the Good Ju-Ju, No Jitters. Unlike coffee, matcha naturally contains L-theanine, an amino acid that works alongside caffeine and supports a calmer, more sustained sense of focus. Think less of a sudden caffeine kick and more of a gentle lift to help you find your flow.
-
Tencha is the special type of Japanese green tea leaf used to make matcha. Unlike ordinary green tea, tencha is grown in the shade, then carefully steamed and dried without rolling to preserve its delicate flavour. The leaves are refined and finely milled into the silky powder we know and love as matcha. At House of Matcha, we use 100% first-harvest tencha, prized for its natural sweetness, rich umami and beautifully smooth finish.
-
Absolutely! Ceremonial grade is a term used to describe high-quality matcha traditionally enjoyed on its own, whisked with water. While there's no official grading system in Japan, what really matters is the quality of the leaves and the care taken in growing and processing them. Our matcha is made from 100% first-harvest, shade-grown tencha, carefully blended by a Japanese tea master for its natural sweetness, rich umami and beautifully smooth finish. Good enough to enjoy on its own, and just as lovely in one of our oat lattes.
